Obituary

Lois Leonard Ryder, a longtime resident of Southgate of Shrewsbury, died on Nov. 25, 2016. She was 99 years old.

Born on May 19, 1917, daughter of the late Archie and Fayalene Leonard, she was raised and educated in Lyndonville, VT. Lois graduated from Wheaton College (Norton, MA) in 1939 with a B.A. in English Literature. She received her teaching certificate from Bank Street in New York City, and taught pre-school for a year there.

She married Robert M. Ryder at her home in Lyndonville on Aug. 3, 1941. They moved to Summit, NJ in 1945, and were married for over 50 years. Robert died in 1994. Lois moved to Shrewsbury in December, 1999, to be near her daughter.

Lois was involved in many volunteer organizations when she lived in Summit. She was a member of the AAUW, and worked at the College Club annual book sale for many years, the proceeds of which provided college scholarships for young women. She was a Friend of the Summit Library, and drove for Meals on Wheels. She was a member of the Central Presbyterian Church.

Lois loved the simple things in life. Among her favorite hobbies were reading, knitting, studying the bible, her collection of dolls, and listening to music. She loved antiques and visiting historic houses. Lois was a long-time member of Tower Hill Botanic Garden. She enjoyed flowers, and spending time walking outdoors. Lois treasured time with her family and friends, both in Summit and at Southgate.

Lois was predeceased by her husband Robert and a brother Donald Leonard.
She is survived by her four children; a daughter, Elizabeth F. Ryder and her husband Peter Martin of Northborough; sons, Jonathan L. Ryder and his wife Barbara of Sarasota, FL; Timothy W. Ryder of Lakewood, NJ and Douglas M. Ryder of Westminster, CO.; eight grandchildren; Beth, Andrew, Courtney, Jordan, Stacey, Paul, James, and Christopher; six great-grandchildren, Reagan, Lily, Ruby, Benjamin, Adam, and Clara.

Family and Friends will gather to honor, remember and celebrate Lois's life in the Chapel at Southgate, 35 Julio Drive, Shrewsbury, at a date in January to be determined. Rev. Lynne Dolan will officiate. Burial will be private.
