Anthony G. Wood, of Shrewsbury, died in his home unexpectedly on Sunday, June 5, 2011. He was 56 years old.
Tony, son of Warren and Trudy (Landgraf) Wood, was born on June 16, 1954 in a military hospital in Würzburg, Germany. In 1957, his family came to the United States and settled in Brockton and then Easton. Tony graduated in 1972 from Brockton High School where he was a standout athlete. His exploits on the gridiron won him an athletic scholarship to Duke University, where he received his bachelor’s degree in 1976. He later earned a master’s degree in education from Framingham State University. After getting married, he moved to Shrewsbury in 1983.
Tony was a devoted history teacher and coach whose career spanned more than 30 years. He began in 1984 at Saint John’s High School, where he led his teams to multiple conference titles. In 2001, he coached his son and the Pioneers to a Super Bowl victory and the most wins in a single season in school history. That same year, Tony was inducted into the Brockton High School hall of fame. His coaching tenure continued at Bishop Feehan High School in Attleboro, where he became the first coach to win two state titles at Gillette Stadium. Collectively, his teams won 5 out of 6 Super Bowl Championships.
As all those close to him would attest, Tony was a football man through and through. He was fiercely loyal to his family, friends, and players. He was an avid reader whose other interests included motorcycles, history, AMC movies, and the music of Elvis Presley.
He leaves behind his wife Denise (Saba) Wood, his son Peter A. Wood, and his daughter Julie M. Wood; his parents Warren and Trudy Wood of Chatham; his brother Ronald J. Wood and his wife Lisa of Rehoboth; in-laws, Margaret (Kelley) Saba of Shrewsbury, Paul Saba of Boston, Frank and Wendy Saba of Shrewsbury, Peter and Jean Saba of Scituate; and several nieces and nephews.
Family and friends will honor and remember Tony's life by gathering for calling hours at Heald & Chiampa Funeral Directors ~ The Sumner House, 5 Church Road, On the Common, Shrewsbury Center on Friday from 4 to 8 p.m.
Funeral services and interment will be private.
