Mrs. Mary C. (Mahan) McGinnis, of Hyannis, formerly of Shrewsbury and Worcester, died Saturday, February 26, 2011 at home. She was 73.

Mary was born in Worcester on July 8, 1937 a daughter of the late William J. & Mary J. (Donohue) Mahan. She graduated from St. Peter’s High School in 1955. Mary attended St. Vincent Hospital School of Nursing and earned her Bachelor of Science in Human Services from New Hampshire College. With a friendship that began in the 8th grade she later courted Jack McGinnis and they married on January 5, 1957 in Our Lady of the Holy Rosary Church in Worcester. They were Shrewsbury residents for over 50 years until 1993 before sharing time between Hyannis and Worcester. They also wintered in Longboat Key, Florida.

With an entrepreneurial drive and independence she formed McGinnis Health Care Services in 1992 with offices in Worcester, Fall River, Pittsfield and Hyannis. She was President of the company until it was sold in 2003.

Mary’s life was rooted in her faith and family and friends. Her greatest joy was spending time at family gatherings amongst new and familiar faces. The Sunday before each Christmas was a long-standing McGinnis tradition where she and her family hosted a large open house. An active member of Saint Mary’s Church she sang in its choir; member of its Women’s Guild; CCD teacher; parade committee; its annual Oktoberfest committee; School Parents’ Association; Little Brown House Project.

Mary received the same professional, tender and loving care during her illness and dying that she once provided to her many patients. Her family is eternally grateful for the kindnesses extended to the entire family by the numerous aides and nurses of V.N.A and Home Staff.
